Lead Data Engineer

 

  • $158,839 per annum + superannuation
  • Full time, Fixed term to 17/10/2025
  • Geelong location (hybrid working model – 3 days in office attendance)

About the role

The Lead Data Engineer will lead the design and development of large-scale cloud hosted solutions, advising on engineering pattern design and logic to support the delivery of WorkSafe’s Data and Analytics Strategy. The Lead Data Engineer will build complex infrastructure, operational processes, and infrastructure automation, creating and improving development and operational capabilities, including disaster recovery, high system availability, on-demand scalable solutions, infrastructure monitoring and continuous deployment capabilities.

Key accountabilities:

  • Take ownership for the code and contribute to the designs that powers our data pipelines ensuring that they are fit-for-purpose for WorkSafe.
  • Lead the design and implementation efforts for a secure and scalable data cloud data environments that delivers for both operational and product needs within an enterprise environment
  • Lead the provision of continuous deployment cycles and on-demand deployments for a cloud data platform
  • Analyse new and existing data sources to assess their applicability to address a business issue, while defining an autonomous ingestion framework.
  • Lead and manage cross-departmental projects and project teams from conception through to implementation
  • Drive resolution of issues identified via application and systems monitoring, resolve emergent service problems and build automated tools to identify/prevent problem recurrence.

About you

You are an experienced Data Engineer with a depth of understanding in database design, including conceptualisation to database optimization. Your experience working in DevOps and Agile environments is well demonstrated in your most recent role/s. Your communication and organisational skills are exceptional and demonstrated through your ability to lead meetings, clearly communicate technical approach, status and mitigation of risks. Further, you will also possess:

  • Deep expertise in ETL development, data structures, storage, specifications and architectures
  • Strong software engineering and coding skills, ideally in a cloud-based data intensive environment
  • Excellent understanding of relevant data languages such as Python or Enterprise R, and SQL. Ability to design and implement data management controls such as RBAC
  • Excellent understanding of cloud data platforms such as AWS, Azure, GCP, Snowflake. Prior experience with DBT would be advantageous
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor other team members, to uplift their capabilities while delivering outcomes
  • Communicate effectively and regularly with leaders and stakeholders socializing key decisions and providing an update on implementation.  

Qualifications:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline
