Regional kids to glimpse engineering future
As part of Australian Engineering Week, Dubbo has announced the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) will host the 2013 regional Great Engineering Challenge in the city.
Local MP Troy Grant said he was proud to see students from across the region would get a glimpse of the engineering world at the event this Thursday.
“The Great Engineering Challenge brings together year 10 and 11 students, their teachers and parents with a range of Roads and Maritime Services staff for a fun filled day of engineering challenges,” Mr Grant said, “Roads and Maritime Services employs hundreds of engineers and has three main pathways for entry level engineering staff - scholarships, the Grad Program and cadetships.”
The Engineering Challenge will fire up at Dubbo Sports World where students will face three challenges to test a range of skills. They will complete a bridge building challenge, a road surface challenge and an intense outdoor surveying activity.
The event, which encourages students to apply lateral thinking to problem-solving, has grown in popularity every year since its inception. Last year it pulled in more than 200 students from around 20 regional schools.
The Regional Great Engineering Challenge starts on the 8th of August, there is also a similar event starting on the 7th at the University of New South Wales. More information is available from Engineers Australia
