The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) is out with its 2013-14 State of the Regions Report.  And it is calling on the Commonwealth to help local governments mitigate against costly natural disasters.

ALGA is concerned with the long-range economic ripples that come from repeated natural disasters like floods, fires and cyclones.

Leading Economist and co-author Dr. Peter Brain says, “It can take communities years to recover from a major disaster and the overwhelming likelihood is that these disasters are going to occur more frequently.  This means that some places may become uninsurable.”
