Jet questions flung at GE
Jetstar wants to know why a near-new engine had to be shut down mid-flight.
Jetstar is calling on the engine manufacturer General Electric, after one of its GEnx model engines had to be shut down during a flight from Tokyo to the Gold Coast on the weekend.
The Boeing 787 was quickly diverted to Guam after oil pressure warning lights were triggered.
“Boeing 787s can fly safely on one engine,” a Jetstar spokesperson said.
The engine was installed just three months ago to replace an engine of the same model.
The older engine, which has been in service for just nine months, was allegedly repaired and now runs in another aircraft.
Jetstar said the original engine was changed due to an “unrelated and minor issue”,
Jetstar’s 11 Boeing 787s are all fitted with GEnx engines.
The company claims it is unusual to have these kinds of issues so early in the life of an aircraft engine, and it will now seek an explanation from the manufacturer.
“GE has a team which is working with our engineers to understand what occurred,” the spokesperson said.
