Researchers are invited to apply for a share in a new $160 million medical research fund.

The New South Wales Government has poured new money into the Medical Research Support Program (MRSP).

The MRSP is designed to cover the indirect costs associated with medical research, such as essential laboratory equipment and support staff, which are often not covered by other funding avenues. 

Applications for this round of funding opened on May 13, under the administration of the NSW Office of Health and Medical Research.

Historically, the MRSP has contributed significantly to various high-impact medical advancements in NSW. 

These include pioneering Australia's first precision medicine program tailored for children with cancer, developing a single diagnostic test that covers over 50 genetic diseases, and creating personalised digital tools for managing depression, anxiety, and stress.

David Harris, the state’s Minister for Medical Research, says NSW is advancing global health through these initiatives. 

“This funding is vital as it covers some of the costs that independent medical research institutes must pay, but may not be included in awarded research grants, such as the costs of infrastructure and support staff,” Harris said. 

Previous beneficiaries of the MRSP include notable institutions such as the Black Dog Institute, Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research, and the Woolcock Institute, all of which have contributed to NSW's status as a leader in medical research.
