Recruitment specialist Hays has published its Quarterly Report – October 2011, finding that engineers and any candidate with experience in the resources industry top the list of skills in demand as job vacancies rise in many areas.

According to the report, vacancy activity remains strong in many sectors such as FMCG and the heavy industries such as mining, oil & gas and mining services organisations.

“Top quality candidates are still in demand and securing jobs. Some organisations might consider reviewing their hiring needs this quarter, however those wanting to maximise growth in the near term are unlikely to alter their recruitment plans,” Grahame Doyle, Director of Hays, said.

“Without doubt the greatest hotspot in our market is for candidates with experience in the resources industry. This demand extends far beyond engineering talent to the whole resources chain, from exploration through to construction, fabrication and exporting. It also extends to support staff, from IT to HR and office support."

The report found the following:

  • The construction industry in the ACT is experiencing high demand for qualified engineers.

  • Queensland is experiencing strong demand for primary and secondary substation engineers as well as experienced oil and gas engineers with project control and construction management. Queensland is also experiencing strong demand for maintenance planners and environmental engineers.
