The Federal Government has announced a $61.4 million injection for state governments to fund smart road infrastructure, cut commute times and reduce greenhouse emissions.

The Federal Government has identified four major roads to undergo feasibility testing into the initiative, including Melbourne’s M1 West Gate Freeway, the M4 Western Motorway in Sydney, the Gateway Motorway in Queensland and an unnamed motorway in Western Australia.

Freight prioritisation, intelligent transport systems and managed motorway systems have been announced as targets for the funding.

"Managed motorways use system control through integrating data collection sensors and control tools to improve real-time management of motorways to secure a higher and more consistent level of motorway performance. This results in travel time savings, improved reliability and reduced greenhouse gas emissions," the budget papers said.
