The Western Australian Government has announced  a $1.2 billion injection for the state’s public transport infrastructure, bringing the planned funding in the area to almost $5 billion over the next four years.

 

The government’s main transport initiatives from the Budget include;

  • $134 million to increase bus route services by 3.3 million kilometers in 2011-12 with an aim to expand by 15.2 million by 2015-16
  • $40 million to purchase an additional 78 busses
  • $164 million for the purchase of 15 new three-car train sets

 

Major rail and bus infrastructure projects planned by the budget include;

  • Completion of the $360 million ‘Perth City Link’ by 2013-14
  • Completion of a new underground bus station by 2015-16 at an estimated cost $249 million
  • $5.5 million upgrade to the Mirrabooka Bus Station

 

Regional upgrades include the acquisition of bus depot facilities in Bunbury, Busselton and Dunsborough will an aim to upgrade bus services in the area.

 

Major road infrastructure include

  • $6 million widening of northbound Mitchell Freeway with an additional $30 million upgrade to be completed in 2012 – 2013
  • $10.6 million upgrade of Coalfields Highway, bringing the total investment in the highway to $25 million
  • $35 million ‘Safer Roads and Bridges Program’
  • $20 million for State Black Spot Program to fund 150 individual projects
