Qantas’ CEO, Alan Joyce, has announced it will invest $30 million to upgrade its heavy maintenance facilities in Brisbane.

The upgrade to the facility will create hundreds of jobs, including 30 apprenticeships.

The move has been welcomed by the Queensland Government, with Premier Campbell Newman describing the announcement as a reinforcement of the Queensland as a major growth area for the airline.

“I welcome today’s announcement by Qantas Chief Executive Alan Joyce that will see the investment of $30 million to upgrade Brisbane’s heavy engineering and maintenance facilities,” Mr Newman said.

“Queensland is the traditional home of Qantas and this announcement demonstrates the important role the State will play in the long-term future of the airline.”

Mr Newman said Qantas was the only large airline that continued to operate heavy engineering and maintenance facilities onshore in Australia.

“It would have been all too easy for them to have gone offshore, but the decision shows that Queensland provides an environment where global companies can be competitive and I congratulate Qantas for their commitment to Australia,” Mr Newman said.
