NBN Co is looking to build a digital twin of its network. 

Reports say two people have been hired to construct and maintain a digital twin of the NBN, an “executive manager for digital twin and innovation environments” as well as an “innovation environment architect”

Computer-based replicas of the physical world - known as ‘digital twins’ - are gaining popularity as a tool to simulate the impacts of new ideas or systems.

Many governments and agencies are taking advantage of the twin approach, including Defence, Airservices Australia, Endeavour Energy, Australia Post, and the Victorian and NSW state governments. 

“NBN Co has been investigating digital twin technology since 2019,” aspokesperson said in a recent statement to reporters.

“Using visualisation in software, we are able to investigate future networking designs in a virtualised lab environment to carry out proof-of-concept activities.”

NBN Co previously has previously listed digital twins as one of the “most significant trends” to build digital reliance in its 2021 digital reliance white paper.
