Deakin University’s $55 million Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering Training (CADET) is set to proceed after the Federal Government announced it will receive $21.5 million in funding under the Regional Priorities round of the Education Investment Fund.

 

Based at the Geelong Waurn Ponds campus, the CADET project will emphasise product design and development through virtual and physical modeling and simulation and prototyping work.

 

“This is very welcome news not only for Deakin but for the Geelong economy and for the broader south-west region as this centre will bring new skills to the region, providing opportunities for the engineering jobs of the future,” Deakin’s Vice Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander said.

 

“Through this centre we hope to build aspiration for careers in engineering, particularly amongst young women who are currently under-represented in the profession.”

 

Member for Corangamite, Darren Cheeseman, said the CADET project will provide hands-on, modern engineering education for school, TAFE and university students throughout the region.

 

"The CADET project will help address regional and national engineering skills shortages by improving access to training and pathways into tertiary education," Mr Cheeseman said.

 

"The project will help increase the number of engineering students in the region by working with TAFE and high schools - a key priority is to encourage more women into engineering careers.
